If marijuana is legal in Virginia, why get a medical certification?

Adults 21 and older in Virginia may legally possess limited amounts of marijuana and grow a few plants at home, but there are still several reasons why qualified individuals should choose to obtain a medical marijuana certification. Here are some of the main reasons:

1. Legal Access to Regulated Products Today: Licensed adult-use retail stores are not scheduled to open in Virginia until July 1, 2027. Until then, licensed medical dispensaries are the only legal place to buy cannabis in Virginia, and they require a written certification.
2. Access to Medical-Grade Products: Medical dispensaries offer products formulated for therapeutic purposes, including products with specific ratios of THC to CBD and cannabis oil products such as tinctures, capsules and topicals. Products are sold by licensed dispensaries regulated by the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority.
3. Guidance From Professionals: A certification comes from a licensed practitioner who evaluates your condition, and dispensaries have pharmacists who can help you choose a product and dose that fits your needs.
4. Access for Adults Under 21: Adult-use cannabis is limited to adults 21 and older. Virginia’s medical program is open to qualified patients 18 and older with a written certification.
5. Employment Protections: Virginia law generally prohibits employers from firing or disciplining an employee for lawful use of cannabis oil with a valid written certification. There are exceptions, for example for impairment at work and for employers who would otherwise violate federal law or lose federal contracts or funding. Adult-use cannabis does not carry this protection.
